The plan

Repository
niconoe/pyinaturalist
Base commit
3cd4a4f (image tag)
Issue
Add support for providing credentials via environment variables As an alternative to passing user credentials as arguments to `rest_api.get_access_token()`, it would be useful to also have the option of providing these via shell environment variables, for example: ``` export INAT_USERNAME="" export INAT_PASSWORD="" export INAT_APP_ID="" export INAT_APP_SECRET="" ```
Files to edit
  • pyinaturalist/rest_api.py
Approach
Modify get_access_token to check os.environ for credentials when arguments are not provided, with function arguments taking precedence over env vars.

Successfully added support for providing credentials via environment variables in `get_access_token()`. **Changes made to `pyinaturalist/rest_api.py`:** 1. Added `import os` at the top of the file 2. Modified `get_access_token()` function signature to make all credential parameters optional (default `None`) 3. Added environment variable lookup logic that checks `os.environ` for `INAT_USERNAME`, `INAT_PASSWORD`, `INAT_APP_ID`, and `INAT_APP_SECRET` when arguments are not provided 4. Function arguments take precedence over environment variables (as specified in the issue) 5. Added proper error messaging when credentials are missing 6.
