The plan

Repository
stac-utils/stac-fastapi
Base commit
494e485 (image tag)
Issue
`make_dataclass` erase the `__post_init__` method in #714 we changed how we create GET request model from using `attrs` to `dataclass`. This was to support `alias` with `-`. The downside was that we need to do `validation/conversion` in a `__post_init__` method. It seems that this wasn't well tested ๐Ÿ˜ข, and now when we create a Model with `extensions` the `__post_init__` is not ran ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ ```python from stac_fastapi.api.models import create_get_request_model from stac_fastapi.extensions.core import FieldsExtension
Files to edit
  • stac_fastapi/api/stac_fastapi/api/models.py
Approach
1. Read models.py to understand the current implementation of create_get_request_model 2. Identify where __post_init__ is being lost 3. Implement a fix that preserves validation/conversion behavior

Finish summary
Fixed the issue where `make_dataclass` was erasing the `__post_init__` method when extensions are provided to `create_get_request_model`. The fix modifies `create_request_model` in `stac_fastapi/api/stac_fastapi/api/models.py` to: 1. Create the dataclass using `types.new_class()` instead of `make_dataclass()` 2. Remove the `__post_init__` method before applying the `dataclass` decorator 3. Add a custom `__post_init__` that calls `__post_init__` from ALL base classes in the MRO This ensures validation/conversion logic in `__post_init__` (which converts strings like `datetime`, `bbox`, `collections`, `ids` to proper types) works correctly regardless of whether extensions are provided. All 9 tests in `stac_fastapi/api/tests/test_models.py` pass, and the original issue is resolved - invalid datetimes now properly raise `HTTPException 400` even when extensions are present.
